Enduring Understanding: Inspired by the ‘master builders’ of the animal kingdom…from birds to spiders to bees…mankind aspires to create innovative shelters that unify art, science, and geometry in clever and imaginative ways. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Course Objective: Children become tiny architects, blending art, science, and geometry as they explore the roots of habitation inspired by animal architecture, indigenous cultures, and contemporary design innovations in paper and textile arts. Students will explore the possibilities of shelter through the Elements of Art: line, shape, color, value, texture and space; creating wondrous grade-specific projects from still-life painting, weaving, paper collage, and clay modeling to the construction of gravity-defying tree-houses, jeweled pavilions, spaghetti-tower playgrounds and nomadic shelters that expand and close! Immersed in the art of defining space while using a variety of visual art media, students will develop an appreciation for the elegance and fragility of the built environment for all species that build to survive and create meaningful spaces.
