Enduring Understanding: The Earth flaunts and conceals an abundance of organic and man-made treasures, alike. To the heart and mind of an artist, it represents the greatest, most accessible treasure map of human endeavor and majestic beauty.

Course Objective: Tapping into a child’s natural curiosity to explore and recreate any environment in vivid color, line, shape and texture, this course unfolds by examining four distinctive landscapes to fuel spontaneous creativity and thoughtful examination.
From the starkly beautiful, arid desert-scapes of New Mexico to the ephemeral mountain-scapes and waterways of China to the bold and electrifying sea-scapes of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and finally, to the ever-transforming landscapes of Earth, itself— concealing fossilized hidden treasures from civilizations and life forms gone by— the Earth holds many secrets just waiting to be unearthed by the adventurous artist. For each warm-up exercise and art project, students will learn about fundamental elements of art, principles of design, and essential visual art vocabulary in a way that organically builds in complexity, scope and emphasis at each grade level, TK-5, with the intention of helping young artists refine their skill-set, artistic sensibilities and level of craftsmanship over time.
