By the End of 5th Grade: Culminating Visual Art Skills
1- Working knowledge of how to properly use tools for specific art media: painting (brushwork/cleaning), pastel and charcoal pencil shading, clay sculpture techniques 2-Knowledge of the Elements of Art: line, color, shape, form, value, texture, space (and how to use them expressively in a work of art) 3-Introduction to the Principles of Design: repetition/pattern, contrast, emphasis/dominance, variety, formal vs informal balance, movement/rhythm, proportion, harmony/unity 4- Exposure to 2-D media: oil and chalk pastel, pencil, ink, charcoal pencil, tempera and acrylic paint, watercolors, India ink, Bamboo brushwork 5-Exposure to 3-D media: clay, wire assemblage, paper construction and collage, found objects 6-Sequencing skills in art production including: preliminary planning by sketching, problem-solving, critical thinking, evaluating, revising and reflecting in written and oral formats 7-Exposure to printmaking processes (stamps, rubbings, negative prints, mixed media) 8-Use of accurate art vocabulary to meaningfully describe works of art 9- Familiar with a rubric as a helpful guide to evaluate the quality of artwork produced 10- Able to highlight the main idea, common theme, and symbolic meaning in works of art 11- Able to apply critical analysis and aesthetic valuing for works of art (both, masters and self) 12- Exposure to historical and cultural influences in their art from African, Native American, Aboriginal, Chinese, Japanese, Inuit, and Ancient Civilizations (specifically Greek and Egyptian) 13-Aware of several traditional and contemporary artists, styles, and pivotal art movements 14-Aware of diverse career opportunities available in the Arts
