Welcome to the Visual Arts Program for SPUSD's three elementary schools: Arroyo Vista, Marengo and Monterey Hills. This year's theme for grades TK-5 is The Artist Within-- a skill-building course designed to educate as well as inspire young artists to harness their natural artistic sensibilities, development of technique, refinement of craft, and synthesis of ideas--evolving in complexity and scope at each grade level.
Scroll down to preview The Artist Within's art course description regarding the visual art lessons that your child is currently, or will be, exploring this year. Please feel free to navigate throughout the site to check out what each grade level is creatively investigating for this art course, as well as courses from previous years-- Magical Landscapes, Art of Myths and Shelter: From Function to Fantasy. Oh yes, our students definitely have talent!

The Artist Within... Every Picture Tells a Story; Every Story Reveals a Picture
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Enduring Understanding: The expressive powers of figurative language and symbolic representation are essential tools that artists use to more vividly inform and enhance their creative process— to reveal the essence within.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Course Objective: Cherished folktales, poems, metaphors, and clever word-play become linguistic portals for students to delve deeper into their vibrant imaginations to tell a more compelling visual story. From strutting birds, wild horses, and playful dogs to technicolor hot-air balloon rides, sailboats in the night, and floating fish, students connect image with figurative language more earnestly to explore and communicate ideas. And along the way, students will learn fundamental elements of art, principles of design, and key visual arts vocabulary in an engaging format that organically builds in complexity at each grade level (T/K-5). The primary goals of the Visual Arts Program are to help young artists make meaningful art, embrace visual storytelling, and develop their perceptual and analytical thinking skills, while exploring artistic techniques, heightening sensitivity through close observation, and refining their level of craftsmanship over time.
